It's the start of 2014 and everyone is thinking about change. Some of us are going beyond a minor change, venturing all the way to a total makeover. Well, before you start with the outer garments, let’s look and see what’s under that new dress, pants or suit. Specifically, let's take a look at your undergarments. YES, I SAID IT, UNDERGARMENTS! What's going on with your bras, panties and shapewear? There is nothing worse than seeing a well-dressed woman with inappropriate undergarments on. It completely destroys your look and the purpose of your makeover. I remember my Mother always pulling my clothes up and adjusting my slip, undershirt and panties. As humiliating as it was when I was ten years old, I now understand why she did it. It makes a huge difference.
Invest in a great bra that supports the “girls.” You will need a variety of bra styles for your wardrobe, including strapless, racerback, and convertible straps. I suggest going to Nordstrom or Victoria’s Secret where they have trained professionals to measure and fit you in the correct size, for free. If you can’t afford their bra prices, you can always go to places like JC Penney’s, Sears, Kohl's, Target or Walmart.* The salespersons at Nordstrom and Vicky’s are also trained to fit breast cancer patients, too. Just call and schedule an appointment. Both stores are extremely accommodating. Nordstrom has cozy dressing rooms for breast cancer patients where you can relax in privacy for consultations and complete medical forms. Remember to bring your prescription from your doctor. The Amoena bra is the world’s leading breast care brand. It sells for approximately $30-$40, and the shell/forms are $200-$350.
I remember when I was pregnant, my Aunt told me to make sure I purchased a “good girdle." Well, that was one of the best investments for my stomach and posture EVER and that was 21 years ago! My stomach looked like an android and I DON’T mean the cell phone! Girdles have come a long way. They are now called shapewear. You can be a size 2 or 22 and still need some smoothing out. There are so many brands including Spanx, Yummie, Waffle, and the list goes on. My personal favorite is Lipo in a Box. It’s sold on QVC for about $40. Target has an affordable brand made by Spanx called Assets.
Talk to a salesperson about what you want to accentuate about your body. Try on one of each style. Let go of the idea that shapewear or girdles are for grandmothers. As a matter of fact, some of us MAY BE grandmothers! Shapers are for ALL ages and sizes. They smooth out the stomach and derriere, and conquer the “muffin top.”
Enjoy lifting the “girls” smoothing the “android,” and looking FABULOUS in your new makeover!
